I just heard Kelly Rowland’s “Dirty Laundry”. Wow.

While listening to her tell her truth, I reminisced on my own as well as those of friends in the past. This song - so powerful, concise, real, sad, and common.

Every woman has their “strong face”. The one they put on after their heart breaks or a heated argument or after they cover the bruises left by someone who claimed to care. Every woman.

To me, what’s sadder than the aftermath or the cover up is that we allowed it to begin or continue. We believed the lies. We went along thinking it would get better or that we weren’t worthy of anything better. In those moments we lost ourselves and allowed someone else to takeover. Please don’t take this the wrong way and think I’m blaming women. I’m not. But something happens to us. Something changes. We become different.

The important thing is that most of us get up. We reach our Breaking Point. We remember who we are and seek a path of self forgiveness and healing.

For Kelly and myself, and the millions of women who have been there and found the way out, it’s critical that we keep moving forward but always reach back to help each other. I’m grateful that Kelly decided to share her story. Hopefully it’ll inspire and empower women to do the same.

In case you haven’t heard: Janelle Monae is awesome! At least to me.

Imagine having Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu blended with some Michael Jackson and Prince. Next throw in a dash of Andre 3000 then a little Funkadelic. Now mix the sounds of R&B, Funk, Rock, Opera, Pop and Electro. Oh, and combine all of that with the sounds of the 30’s, 60’s, 70’s and the 80’s.

That’s what Janelle Monae sounds like to me, and it is awesome!

I didn’t feel this way a week ago, however. That’s because I had never heard her music until I saw the video for Q.U.E.E.N. As soon as it was over I went to Spotify to see what else I could find. That’s when I came across her EP and Debut albums. Needless to say, I was blown away. I loved every minute of it. I can’t wait until her next release.
